Number types for sales teams and agencies
Business phone numbers for texting: choose by how you reach people
Beam offers six kinds of numbers: direct lines, real cell phone numbers, SIP endpoints, toll free numbers, regular local numbers and short codes. The right one depends on three things: whether people text you first, how many new contacts you reach each day, and whether the number has to ring a phone system too.
Number availability, area codes and approval timelines depend on carriers and inventory. Beam is not affiliated with Apple.
Which number types does Beam offer?
| Number type | What it is | Fits | Before you send business SMS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct line | A dedicated number for one person or team that customers save and reply to | Account managers, recruiters, agents who own a book of clients | Follows the SMS rules for its number type |
| Real cell phone number | A mobile number on a real device, so texts look like they came from a person | Relationship selling and conversations that should feel personal | Message only people who expect you; pacing and warm up matter most here |
| SIP endpoint | A number delivered to your phone system or software over SIP, so calls land where your team already works | Teams with an existing phone system or contact center software | Texting rules follow the underlying number type |
| Toll free number | An 8XX number recognized nationwide | Support lines and national brands with high inbound volume | Toll free messaging verification |
| Regular local number | A ten digit number with a local area code | Local service businesses and multi location teams | A2P 10DLC registration |
| Short code | A five or six digit number for high volume programs | Alerts, reminders and opt in campaigns at scale | Carrier program approval and a short code lease |
Short codes are five or six digits (US Short Code Directory), and local business SMS runs on the A2P 10DLC framework (T-Mobile guidance).
How do you choose the right business number?
- Do most people text you first? Inbound conversations have no warm up ceiling on Beam, so a direct line or local number is usually enough. See how numbers are assigned.
- Do you reach many new contacts each day? Spread volume across a pool of lines. Beam keeps each lead on one permanent number while the pool rotates across leads.
- Must calls ring your existing phone system? Choose a SIP endpoint so the same number works in the tools your team already uses.
- Is it a large opt in program? A short code or a verified toll free number suits alerts and reminders sent to big lists.
When do local numbers, direct lines or real cell numbers fit?
For most sales teams and agencies the work happens on local numbers and direct lines. Customers recognize the area code, save the contact and reply. Real cell phone numbers suit conversations that should look like a text from a person rather than a brand. On Beam, every contact keeps one number for the life of the relationship, so the full history stays in one thread on their phone, and the inbox, workflows and AI assistant all reply from that same number.
New lines start slow. Beam ramps each new number gradually so day one traffic never looks like a blast. Numbers and warm up explains the ramp. If the same numbers also place calls, caller ID reputation matters as much as texting reputation; RizzDial explains how caller ID reputation is scored.
When do toll free numbers and short codes fit?
Toll free numbers work well for support lines and national brands. Before business texting they need toll free messaging verification, and new verification submissions from September 15, 2026 must include public privacy policy and terms links (toll free verification update).
Short codes are built for high volume opt in programs such as alerts and reminders. They need a lease and carrier approval of the program before launch, which takes planning (US Short Code Directory). Both types fit one to many programs better than one to one sales conversations.
What is a SIP endpoint for, if you already have a phone system?
If your team already works in a phone system or contact center software, a SIP endpoint delivers the number there. Calls land in the tools your team uses today, and texting follows the rules of the underlying number type. Tell us which system you use so we can confirm the setup on a test number before rollout.
Where does iMessage fit with each number type?
On a capable line, Beam reaches eligible iPhones by iMessage and supported Android phones by RCS, with SMS fallback for other recipients. iMessage conversations need no A2P registration. SMS fallback from the same line follows the SMS rules for that number type. See iMessage for business and texting compliance for the full picture.
Which number works for clinics and healthcare teams?
Clinics usually want two things from a number: patients should recognize it, and staff should be able to share the replies. A local number or a direct line for the front desk covers both. Beam supports HIPAA compliant texting through compliant carrier infrastructure, and the practice still decides what each message contains and who on staff can read it. Keep reminders to the minimum necessary, record each patient's contact preference and read texting compliance before you send patient messages.
Large reminder programs that send the same message to thousands of patients may suit a verified toll free number or a short code instead. Plan those programs early, because verification and approval follow carrier timelines.
What mistakes cost teams their numbers?
- Sending a blast from a brand new line. New numbers need a gradual ramp. A first day burst looks like spam to the systems that watch traffic.
- Switching numbers in the middle of a conversation. A lead who hears from two numbers sees two strangers. Keep each contact on one number.
- Choosing a number type to dodge registration. Every number type has its own rules. Pick the one that fits the traffic and finish its paperwork.
- Ignoring reply rates. Falling replies and complaints are the earliest warning. Slow down before carriers filter the line.
- Treating registration as consent. Registration identifies your business. Consent is a separate record you keep for every contact.
Each of these is avoidable with the right number mix and a short pilot on contacts who expect to hear from you.

What do teams ask about number types?
Which number types does Beam offer?
Direct lines, real cell phone numbers, SIP endpoints, toll free numbers, regular local numbers and short codes.
Do I have to choose a number type myself?
No. Most teams describe how they text and Beam recommends the mix. You can still ask for a specific type when you need one.
Is a toll free or local number better for texting customers?
Local numbers and direct lines suit one to one conversations because customers recognize the area code. Toll free numbers suit support lines and national programs and need toll free verification first.
When does a short code make sense?
When you run a large opt in program such as alerts or reminders. Short codes need a lease and carrier approval, so plan ahead.
Can my number ring our existing phone system?
Yes. A SIP endpoint delivers the number to your phone system or contact center software.
Does iMessage need A2P registration?
No. iMessage conversations need no A2P registration; SMS fallback follows the rules for the number type.
